Not There Gallery is pleased to present “I am a garden, blooming with seeds planted by those who’ve walked beside me”, an exhibition of painted works by Paris-based artist Pernilla Winberg.

This philosophy is at the core of Winberg’s work, where themes of family, friendship, and human connection are intricately woven.

Winberg’s artistic approach spans modern figurative abstraction across paintings, drawings, and prints, all rooted in an exploration of identity. This process draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including documentaries, found images, and private family photographs. These influences, imbued with personal reflection, evolve into rich visual narratives that evoke memory and storytelling.

Vivid color palettes, layered forms, and softened edges often begin with vibrant fluorescent hues and contrasting tonal shifts that move between darkness, softness, and ethereal ambiguity. This approach is most notable in her ‘Family Motifs’ series and the collection ‘Tangled of Heartstrings’, both of which convey a theatrical sense of mystery and examines how relationships and shared experiences mold individuality over time.

Winberg’s works investigate the overlap between personal memory and collective experience, exploring how our connections shape who we become. Captured figures within their surroundings, portraying visionary scenes infused with intentional glitches and subtle distortions are introduce as a semi-abstract quality. The intentional glitches and distortions are metaphors for the imperfections and complexities of memory and inner essence.

Winberg’s pieces explore the fragile balance between order and chaos, unity and individuality. Each painting serves as an invitation to reflect on the connections that shape personal experiences and contemplate of the unseen threads connecting us all.

Winberg is driven by a profound connection to narratives and compelling images. By leaving comfort behind, she challenges the security of her hometown, with her art serving as a reflection of the pursuit of adventure. In the course of this journey, a profound love for the vast world develops, accompanied by a yearning for a secure place to belong.

Winberg's creations exist in a realm between disintegrated figurations and conceptual neo-expressionism. Her art pulsates with vibrant, colourful figurative expressions, capturing the viewer's attention and eliciting direct emotions. Winberg sees glitch, error, and brokenness not as flaws, but as integral parts of her artistic mosaic. It’s a celebration of imperfection, a dance with the unexpected, and an exploration of the unpredictable. In her hands, these fragments seamlessly merge to form a coherent narrative, where imperfections become art in their own right. Through her work, Winberg invites the audience to experience a more immediate and visceral connection, transcending the boundaries of traditional art.

Pernilla Winberg is based in Paris, originally from Halmstad, Sweden.
